You have decided, you are ready. It is time to start use cloth diapers! You type in cloth diapers on Google and start to browse the result. Suddenly you feel a spin in the head, there are so many terms and shortenings, more than you could ever imagine. You close the browser and feel like “well not so bad using disposables after all”.

So typically a cloth diaper consists of two parts, one outer waterproof shell and the inner part that has some sort of absorption.

AIO/SIO

All In One eller Snap In One. Det mest kompletta systemet. Här består utsidan av ett vattentätt skal i PUL (polyuretanlaminat) och sedan absorberande inlägg. En AIO kan ha allt absorberande material fastsytt i skalet och detta är mest likt en engångsblöja. Hela blöjan tas av vid kiss eller bajs och tvättas i en del. En del AIO har lösa inlägg eller inlägg som är fastsydda i ena änden av blöjan och kan vikas in eller ut i blöjan, detta för att förkorta torktiden.

En SIO består också av ett vattentätt skal av PUL. Insidan är inlägg med knappar som fästs i PUL-skalet. Beroende på insidan av PUL-skalet kan man vid kiss eller bajs ta bort och endast tvätta inläggen och återanvända skalen, eller så behöver både skal och inlägg tvättas. Finns i fasta storlekar och one size (storleken justeras ofta med knappar på utsidan och gör att blöjan passar från nyfödd tills barnet slutar med blöja).

Pocket diapers

Består av ett vattentätt skal i PUL samt absorberande inlägg. Skalet i sig är inte absorberande men i en pocketblöja finns det som en ficka där man kan lägga lösa inlägg. Detta gör att du kan enkelt öka eller minska mängden absorberande material.

Ovansidan av fickan (det som kommer vara närmast barnets hud) kan bestå av naturmaterial (som gör att barnet kommer kännas blöt när det kissar) eller av ett torrskikt (som gör att barnet känner sig torr vid kiss). Hela blöjan (skal och inlägg) byts vid kiss eller bajs. Finns i fasta storlekar och one size.

PUL diaper covers

PUL-skal är endast ett vattentätt skal. På insidan av PUL-skal från Green Poppy finns det tryckknappar som inlägg kan fästas i. Det finns även flärpar fram och bak av PUL-skalet, under dessa flärpar kan man fästa lösa inlägg som saknar knappar eller om man använder sig av limpvikta vikblöjor.

När man använder PUL-skal kan man välja att bara tvätta inläggen vid kiss eller bajs och återanvända skalet tills det har kommit bajs på det eller till dess att skalet känns ofräscht. Finns i fasta storlekar och one size.

PUL pants

A pair of pants that consist of PUL. You put the pants over different types of diapers or inserts. They usually have soft cuffs around the waist and legs. Only available in sized.

Wool pants

A pair of soft pants made of wool. You place them over different types of diapers and inserts. Wool needs to be lanolised to be used as a waterproof barrier (you can read more about that here). Wool is an anti-bacterial, thermoregulating and breathable material. You wash the wool after contact with poo or when the wool starts to feel unfresh (usually around every 3-6 weeks). Comes in many different sizes.

Wool cover

A soft diaper cover made of wool. Puts over different types of diapers and inserts. Also need lanoline to be waterproof. Some wool diaper covers come in one size and the size will be regulated with snaps. Other wool diaper covers are sized.

Fitted diaper

The diaper is usually a bit chunkier. The whole diaper consists of absorbent material, and you will need a waterproof barrier to use this. There are fitted diapers with or without dry layers sewn to them. Fitted diapers are common to use during night time. The whole diaper goes in the laundry after usage. Comes in sized and one size.

Flat diapers

Ett större kvadratiskt tygstycke. Vanliga mått är 60×60 cm eller 70×70 cm. Ofta i bomull (muslin) men finns även i andra mer absorberande material som bambu. Säljs ofta på babybutiker som muslinfilt men funkar fint som blöja. Detta är det billigaste systemet gällande tygblöjor. En vikblöja kan vikas på olika sätta runt barnet. En vikblöja kräver ett vattentätt skal utanpå.

Preflat

Similar to a flat diaper but usually they have a bit higher absorption. A preflat consists of multiple layers of fabric. It has a different shape than a flat diaper. There are fewer ways to fold a preflat than a flat diaper, but some states it is easier to use. In similarity to a flat diaper, the preflat needs a waterproof cover around it.

Prefold

It is like an insert, only thicker and bigger. A prefold usually have lines that shows how to fold it. The most common way to fold a prefold is to fold it like a large rectangle. Comes in many different sizes and materials. Needs a waterproof cover.

Inserts

There are more inserts and combinations of inserts than possible to count to. You will need to try a few inserts to see what the perfect fit for you and your baby is. The most common fabrics for inserts are microfiber, cotton, bamboo and hemp.

• Microfibre.Absorbs the fastest but holds the smallest amount of fluids. You usually puts this type of insert at the top – but nere directly to the baby’s skin. These inserts helps to capture the fluids and the spread it out to the layers beneath it. It is possible though for the insert to act like a sponge and let out fluids if there is pressure to it.
• Cotton.Have a fast absorption time, but not as fast as microfiber. Cotton is better at retaining fluids than microfiber. Cotton is made on natural fibre. Cotton is common to have as the first layer of inserts, it can also be in contact with the baby’s skin.
• Bamboo.Absorbs slower than cotton but can contain a greater amount of fluids than both cotton and microfiber. Is common as a middle layer or in combination with cotton.
• Hemp.Absorbs the slowest of all fibres, but can at the same time hold the most amount of fluids. Is usually put as the bottom layer of insert. Common fabric for boosters. Can with advantage be used during night time or when you want to change the diaper more rarely.

Stay dry liners

The main purpose of dry liners is to keep the baby dry when peeing. They usually don’t consist of any absorbing fabrics, but there are a few on the market that does both. Dry liners can be sewn in to the diaper or look like an insert. Here at Green Poppy, we sell dry liners made of AWJ (athletic wicking jersey/coolmax) or micro fleece. You put the dry liner as the top layer, closest to the baby’s skin. There are also dry liners made of wool and silk.
