The stay-dry layer is a fabric made from various forms of polyester, and its main function is to keep the baby dry when they wee. The stay-dry layer can be sewn into a nappy (e.g. in an All-In-One, pocket or fitted) or placed loosely as a thin insert in a nappy of your choice. The function of the dry layer is to wick away liquid and moisture from the child’s skin so that the child does not feel wet when they wee. The dry layer has no absorbent function of its own; it simply serves to wick away moisture. However, there are insert nappies with a sewn-in dry layer, but in such cases the insert consists of more than just the dry layer.
Stay dry liners are washed after use with regular diaper laundry.
Fleece, microfleece or polar fleece. Soft and cozy, fleece quickly wicks away moisture when the child urinates. It is made of 100% polyester. Green Poppy provides pocket diapers with microfleece or loose inserts with microfleece.
Mock suede. This material swiftly wicks away moisture and is common in pocket diapers. Mock suede can develop pills easily after washing and consists of 100% polyester.
Wool and silk.These are natural materials. They cannot be machine-washed and are ideal for children who do not poop frequently, as they require hand washing.
When to use stay dry liners and when not to is a personal choice.
– Keeps the child dry, some children get bothered if they are wet.
– Can reduce the risk of rash.
– Perfect in a night nappy when the baby has a nappy on for a longer period.
– Can make nappy changes easier if the child has had a poo, provided it is a loose insert that can be lifted.
The most common dry layers consist of synthetic fibres, which some people do not wish to use for various reasons.
– Some children react with rashes to synthetic fibres
– The nappy doesn't react when the baby has urinated, which can be good if the baby does, for example, when nappy training.
